Gravel Calculator — Free Online Tool
Estimate gravel in cubic yards, cubic meters, cubic feet and metric tonnes. Enter project dimensions, depth, extra allowance, density and optional price.
How to use the Gravel Calculator
Estimate gravel in cubic yards, cubic meters, cubic feet and metric tonnes. Enter project dimensions, depth, extra allowance, density and optional price.
- Measure the rectangular surface dimensions, using feet or meters.
- Enter gravel depth in inches, centimeters or feet.
- Select a realistic extra percentage and the supplier’s bulk density.
- Review cubic yards, cubic meters, estimated mass and optional costs before ordering.
Accuracy note: Never assume a single gravel density fits all aggregates or moisture levels.
Gravel Calculator formula and method
Gravel volume = length × width × depth. Convert all inputs to one length unit first, add (1 + waste% ÷ 100), and convert cubic meters to cubic yards using 1 yd = 0.9144 m.
All numeric results depend on entered measurements, dimensions and settings. Intermediate calculations retain decimal precision; displayed results may be rounded. Verify material specifications, relevant laws and seller fee conditions where applicable.
Worked example
A 10 × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep covers 25 cubic feet = 0.9259 cubic yards before waste. At 10% extra, plan around 1.019 cubic yards. Density is needed before converting volume to tonnes.
Adjust the values in the interactive tool above to reproduce this example or model your own situation.
Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need for 100 square feet?
At 3 inches deep the base volume is 25 cubic feet, about 0.926 cubic yards, before extra material.
Is gravel sold by cubic yard or tonne?
Both occur. A cubic yard measures volume, whereas a tonne measures mass; moisture and stone type affect density.
Does gravel settle after delivery?
Yes. Material can compact; enter an appropriate extra allowance and confirm with your installer.
