Sod Calculator — Free Online Tool
Estimate lawn sod coverage in square feet and square meters, including cutting waste, roll counts, whole pallets and optional pricing.
How to use the Sod Calculator
Estimate lawn sod coverage in square feet and square meters, including cutting waste, roll counts, whole pallets and optional pricing.
- Measure the length and width of a rectangular lawn section.
- Select feet or meters, and enter anticipated cut waste.
- Check the actual roll and pallet coverage sold by your supplier.
- Use the roll or pallet estimate, not both added together, to place the order.
Accuracy note: Rectangular area estimate. Suppliers offer different roll/pallet areas, and irregular shapes need separate sections.
Sod Calculator formula and method
Lawn area = length × width. Sod coverage required = lawn area × (1 + waste%). Rolls = ceil(required coverage ÷ per-roll coverage); pallets are calculated separately.
All numeric results depend on entered measurements, dimensions and settings. Intermediate calculations retain decimal precision; displayed results may be rounded. Verify material specifications, relevant laws and seller fee conditions where applicable.
Worked example
A 50 ft × 30 ft lawn is 1,500 square feet. With 7% extra, plan for 1,605 square feet. At 10 square feet per roll, that is 161 rolls; pallet quantities depend on your supplier.
Adjust the values in the interactive tool above to reproduce this example or model your own situation.
Frequently asked questions
How many sod rolls cover 1,000 square feet?
If each roll covers 10 sq ft, exactly 100 rolls cover 1,000 sq ft before cutting waste.
How much extra sod should I order?
Some cutting allowance is usually sensible, but the right percentage depends on obstacles and layout.
Can I use meters for dimensions?
Yes. Area is converted to square feet for roll and pallet calculations.
