How to use the Quilt Binding Calculator

Estimate straight-grain quilt binding strips, required total binding length, diagonal joining loss and fabric yardage rounded up to practical purchase fractions.

  1. Step 1. Measure both quilt edges after quilting and trimming.
  2. Step 2. Choose the cut width of straight-grain binding strips.
  3. Step 3. Add length for finishing join, corners and small losses.
  4. Step 4. Specify actual usable width of fabric; buy the rounded-up cutting yardage.

Important: For width-of-fabric straight-grain binding; choose bias methods separately when required.

Quilt Binding Calculator formula explained

Quilt perimeter = 2 × (width + length). Required binding = (perimeter + overlap) × (1 + extra%). Usable length from N diagonal-joined strips ≈ N × width of fabric − (N − 1) × strip width.

All calculator outputs depend on the measurements, units and assumptions you enter. Intermediate calculations use unrounded numeric values; formatted results may be rounded for easier reading. For any consequential purchasing or construction decision, verify supplier specifications and regulations.

Worked example with real numbers

A 60 × 72 inch quilt has 264 inches of perimeter. Add 12 inches of tail and 5% extra: about 289.8 inches required. With 42-inch usable width and 2.5-inch cut strips, eight strips allow about 318.5 inches after diagonal joins.

The example illustrates the formula independently of the interactive fields. You can change the values above to match your own project and compare results.

Frequently asked questions

Do diagonal joins use extra binding length?

Yes. Each diagonal join shortens the available length by roughly the width of a binding strip. This is included in the model.

Does this tool calculate bias binding?

No. Bias binding is cut on a diagonal layout and requires a different fabric calculation.

Why is fabric yardage rounded up?

The purchase is rounded to the next eighth of a yard as a practical standard, but retailer increments can differ.

Can I make binding strips wider?

Yes. Enter your preferred cut strip width; it changes both fabric used and diagonal join loss.
