Etsy & Shopify Product Photo Sizes: White Background and Image Quality Guide

Official Etsy and Shopify image dimensions, accepted formats, thumbnail crops, transparent PNG advice and a practical white-background product photography workflow.

A good product photograph answers two questions quickly: “What exactly am I buying?” and “Can I trust what I see?” Clean backgrounds, consistent framing and enough resolution help—but editing too aggressively can make a real product look artificial or misleading.

Quick answer

For Etsy, follow its recommendation to upload listing photos at least 2,000 pixels in width and height, and keep the main subject away from thumbnail edges. For Shopify, 2,048 × 2,048 pixels is a commonly recommended square product-photo size, with uploads subject to Shopify’s file and pixel limits. Start from a sharp original, prepare a truthful crop, then choose a clean background. A transparent cutout must be flattened when the destination does not support transparency.

Etsy vs Shopify product image sizes and formats

Platform requirements aren’t interchangeable. Etsy’s official shop-image guidance recommends listing photos with both width and height at least 2,000 pixels. It also advises an initial listing photo in a horizontal or square orientation so the main subject stays in the center of thumbnail crops. Etsy says transparent PNG images are not supported as transparency; transparent areas can appear black.

Shopify’s product media documentation allows product or collection image dimensions up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels, or 25 megapixels, and requires individual files under 20 MB. Shopify notes that 2,048 × 2,048 pixel square product photos generally display well. Its themes and responsive image service can deliver different renditions across devices.

Issue Etsy Shopify
Practical reference size 2,000 px or greater in both dimensions is recommended for listing photos. 2,048 × 2,048 px is a recommended square product-image size.
Transparency Transparent PNGs may display as black in the transparent region; flatten first. PNG and JPEG are supported; presentation can vary by theme and use case.
First impression Center the subject and test thumbnail crops, not just the full image. Use consistent image ratios for tidy product grids.
File size Large images may upload slowly; follow Etsy’s current help guidance. Product and collection images must be smaller than 20 MB.
Important: These are marketplace recommendations, not Solvory output promises. The current Product Photo Background Studio produces a 1,500 × 1,500 pixel exported composition. That is useful for previews and some online uses, but below Etsy’s 2,000-pixel recommendation and Shopify’s 2,048-pixel square suggestion. For final compliant high-resolution assets, work from a sufficiently detailed original in an editor that genuinely exports the required dimensions. Merely upscaling 1,500 pixels does not restore lost image detail.

How to make a white-background product photo

  1. Start with the best source photograph. Take the picture in even light, use the highest practical resolution, and make sure the whole product is sharp. Photograph the real item rather than relying on invented textures or product shapes.
  2. Remove distracting background only when needed. If the original photo is busy, create a transparent cutout with Solvory AI Background Remover or another appropriate editor. Inspect fine edges such as threads, transparent glass, fringe or hair; automatic masks are never guaranteed perfect.
  3. Open the Product Photo Background Studio. Upload the transparent product PNG. This studio composes backgrounds and shadows; it does not independently remove a solid background from an ordinary photo.
  4. Select solid white. For a clean white listing look, use #FFFFFF. For a lifestyle or brand image, subtle neutral gradients may work better, but keep product colors credible.
  5. Adjust scale and margins. Give handles, straps and other important features enough space. Etsy thumbnails can use multiple shapes, so do not push critical details to the edges.
  6. Add a natural shadow sparingly. A slightly soft contact shadow can anchor an otherwise floating cutout. Avoid a large blurred halo or a drop shadow that contradicts the lighting direction.
  7. Check final size and export. Verify actual pixel dimensions, file format and destination requirements before publishing. Compare the export with the original photo for edge artifacts or unexpected colors.

What makes a product photograph look professional?

1. Light the actual object before editing

You can correct a distracting background later, but you cannot reliably repair motion blur, blown-out white details or missing texture with a basic graphic editor. Shopify’s product photography guide describes using a window-lit setup, a table and a white background. A folded white card can act as a reflector to soften harsh shadows. Adjust the product until the texture is visible rather than relying on excessive sharpening.

2. Keep color and proportions truthful

Buyers judge fabric, paint, packaging, wood grain and finishes from pictures. Avoid recoloring a product into a variant that does not exist. If you sell several real colors, photograph each version or clearly label accurately documented variants. Do not use AI-created visual details to imply that a real product has a feature it lacks.

3. Use a consistent set of compositions

A strong gallery often begins with a clean overview, followed by close-ups of textures or features, scale reference, real use, packaging or included parts. Consistent background colors and framing make a store look more coherent than unrelated crops. For comparing real variants or size options, combine two photos with Image Merger Pro—but don’t squeeze multiple full-size products into a thumbnail when the platform expects a clear single image.

4. Test the smallest thumbnail first

A product shot can look gorgeous at desktop width and fail in a crowded mobile search-results grid. Reduce a preview until it resembles a small phone thumbnail. If the item becomes impossible to recognize, scale it larger within the available frame and remove unnecessary labels. Use Etsy’s own thumbnail preview where available.

JPEG vs PNG vs WebP: which file should you upload?

Format Use it for Potential downside
JPEG (.jpg) Ordinary product photographs with a solid background and broad marketplace compatibility. Lossy compression can soften very fine detail if quality is set too low.
PNG (.png) Product compositions with sharp graphics, clean edges or transparency during editing. Files are often larger. Transparent PNG isn’t an appropriate final listing image for all marketplaces.
WebP (.webp) Web use when the platform or theme accepts it and efficient delivery matters. Don’t assume every marketplace accepts direct WebP uploads—check the destination.

Keep an untouched master photograph and export separate marketplace versions. If your selected size and image compression are already good, avoid repeatedly re-exporting a JPEG through different apps. Our Bulk Image Resizer and Image Compressor are useful for creating supplementary web variants, but file-size compression should never hide real product features.

Mini checklist before publishing an Etsy or Shopify photo

  • Is the item sharp, recognizable and accurately colored?
  • Is the background clean without clipping fabric, glass or fine edges?
  • Are all required details visible after the platform’s crop?
  • Are the actual export dimensions sufficient for the marketplace?
  • Is the file format accepted, and do the transparent areas behave as expected?
  • Does the final gallery show the real product clearly rather than rely on misleading edits?
  • Have you compared the final uploaded result on mobile and desktop?

Frequently asked questions

What size should an Etsy listing image be?

Etsy recommends width and height of 2,000 pixels or more for listing photos. It also recommends centering the main subject to account for different thumbnail crops.

Is 2,048 × 2,048 enough for Shopify product photos?

Shopify recommends 2,048 × 2,048 pixels as a strong size for square product images. Exact presentation also depends on your theme, image content and display conditions.

Can I upload a transparent PNG as an Etsy listing photo?

Etsy’s own guidance says transparent PNG images are not supported as transparency and transparent areas can appear black. Use a solid background for the final listing file.

Can I remove the background and add a shadow in one tool?

Solvory provides separate tools: first create a cutout with Background Remover, then use Product Photo Studio to add a new background, margins and a shadow.
