A good green-screen effect should look invisible: the person or product stays sharp while the background changes. A poor one leaves green halos, missing edges, or a subject that seems to float. The difference is usually in how the footage is shot and how the key color is tuned—not in an extravagant AI filter.
To remove a green screen online, import footage filmed against a fairly even green (or blue) background, select that color with a chroma-key control, increase tolerance until the backdrop is removed, then soften harsh edges and reduce green spill. Place a new image, video or color behind the foreground, preview the result and export. The Solvory Chroma Key Studio processes the video in your browser; the current version supports WebM export on compatible browsers and is not a general AI person-background remover.
What is green-screen removal, and how is it different from AI background removal?
Chroma keying makes pixels within a selected color range transparent so another visual layer can show through. A plain, evenly lit green backdrop is useful because it normally contrasts with skin tone and clothing. But if the subject wears green, a color-based key may also remove part of the subject. Blue screens work in the same way with a different target color.
AI segmentation, by contrast, attempts to identify subjects or foreground regions from patterns learned by a trained model, even without a green screen. It can work on ordinary footage, but fine hair, motion blur and occlusions remain difficult. Do not assume these two technologies are equivalent. Solvory’s current Video Background Remover & Chroma Key Studio implements color-key removal, not a trained AI human segmentation system.
| Situation | Recommended method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Well-lit green screen behind a presenter | Chroma key | Direct control of selected color and edge softness |
| Solid blue backdrop; green clothing | Blue-screen chroma key | Avoids removing parts of a green outfit |
| Busy normal room, no colored backdrop | Trained foreground-segmentation tool | No uniform color exists to key away |
| Perfectly preserved thin hair on difficult footage | Manual mask refinement or professional compositing | Automatic processing may create artifacts |
Record your green-screen video correctly before editing
Footage quality matters more than elaborate controls. A tool cannot fully recover details obscured by motion blur or heavy compression. Try this practical pre-shoot checklist:
- Light the backdrop evenly. Avoid bright hotspots at one corner and dark shadows at the other. Smooth fabric or a properly mounted screen is easier to key than folds.
- Separate the subject from the backdrop. More distance helps reduce green reflections along shoulders, skin and hair. The ideal distance depends on room size and lighting.
- Choose contrasting clothing. If a product or model includes green details, film against blue or adjust the screen color appropriately.
- Keep the subject within the frame. Check arms, hair, props and furniture through the full movement, not just a still shot.
- Avoid excessive compression. Blocky edges and mosquito noise around hair become obvious when the background is removed.
- Capture clean audio separately when needed. Some browser export paths cannot reliably preserve original video audio; always inspect the downloaded result.
How to remove a green background from video online
1Import your green-screen clip
Open the Solvory Video Background Remover and choose a playable video file. The browser has to decode it; supported input containers and codecs vary across Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. In the current tool, the source clip should be 95 seconds or shorter and under 200 MB. Shorter clips are easier to render on mobile.
2Choose green or blue screen
Start with the Green Screen or Blue Screen preset. If your actual backdrop is a different shade, adjust the screen-color picker. The goal is to target the background, not the skin or clothing. Do not choose the brightest pixel from a reflective highlight unless it represents the broader background.
3Adjust chroma tolerance slowly
Increase tolerance until most of the backdrop disappears. Stop if the subject starts losing color or developing transparent holes. Higher tolerance can remove more uneven green—but it also risks deleting green objects on the foreground. Watch several frames, especially when the person moves or shadows shift.
4Soften the edge and reduce green spill
Adjust edge softness just enough to avoid a saw-tooth outline. Excessive softness can create a blurry halo. Use spill correction if reflected green light contaminates skin or hair. Spill removal alters edge colors; it cannot reconstruct details that never existed in the recording.
5Replace the backdrop and preview
Choose a solid color, background image or compatible looping background video. Set the foreground scale and play the composite. Inspect edges against both light and dark areas of the chosen background; bad keys are often invisible until you switch backdrop colors.
6Export and verify the finished file
Use Render & Download WebM if your browser supports Canvas capture and MediaRecorder’s WebM encoding. Export occurs approximately in real time—keep the tab active. You can also download the current frame as PNG. The current Solvory tool does not promise MP4 export, true transparent-background video, or guaranteed audio preservation. Play the saved file in another application and verify picture, duration and sound.

Chroma-key settings: what each slider changes
The precise target RGB color. Use green/blue presets as starting points, then refine to match the recorded background.
How broadly similar colors are removed. Too little leaves a green fringe; too much eats into the subject.
Gradual transparency around the key threshold. Moderate feathering smooths outlines; excessive feathering looks fuzzy.
Suppresses some unwanted green cast near the subject. It cannot fix a heavily green-lit face or replace missing hair detail.
Why green-screen video sometimes looks bad
Green outline around hair or shoulders
Reduce spill at capture time by moving the subject away from the backdrop. In editing, increase tolerance just enough to remove the remaining screen and fine-tune softness. Check whether the fringe changes when the subject moves.
Clothing or objects become transparent
The subject includes colors too close to the screen. Lower tolerance or refilm with a differently colored screen. A simple color picker cannot distinguish a green shirt from a green backdrop on its own.
Black edge or blocky compression artifacts
Compression, poor lighting or overly hard thresholds can cause rough silhouettes. Work from a higher-quality original if available and use modest feathering instead of extreme blur.
The export is silent or stops prematurely
Browser MediaRecorder/audio-track support varies. Test in current Chrome or Edge, keep the tab active for real-time rendering, and verify your file. If the audio is missing, add the source audio back later using the Add or Replace Audio in Video tool.
I do not have a green screen
Use a true person/background-segmentation tool instead. Chroma key cannot accurately isolate a subject from a cluttered office solely by turning up tolerance.
Make better social-media videos after keying
Once the background is replaced, you may need to make the canvas vertical for a Reel, square for a post or widescreen for YouTube. The Video Resizer & Social Reframe Studio helps with aspect-ratio changes. For clip timing use the Video Trimmer & Cropper, and add time-coded captions using the Subtitle Burner Studio. Export compatibility depends on each editing tool and browser.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove a green screen without installing software?
Yes, browser-based chroma-key tools can composite clips locally when the browser supports video decoding and canvas rendering.
Does green screen removal mean AI background removal?
No. Color-key removal targets a known screen color; neural background segmentation tries to identify a subject without that screen.
Can I replace green screen with a picture?
Yes. Import your foreground green-screen video, then add a background image and adjust the key.
Why is my exported video in WebM instead of MP4?
The current Solvory tool uses browser MediaRecorder with supported WebM codecs; MP4 encoding is not provided in this build.
