Discount Calculator: formula & methodology
Final price = original × (1 − discount1/100) × (1 − discount2/100). Multiply by quantity, then add applicable sales tax.
The tool uses your entered values and explicitly labeled assumptions. Final results may be rounded for display, while intermediate arithmetic retains available numeric precision. Verify material, tax, device or platform specifications relevant to your situation.
Worked example
A $100 item with 20% followed by 10% off costs $72 before tax. The effective discount is 28%, not 30%.
Try the example above and then change values to reflect your own project or comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Are stacked discounts added?
No. Sequential discounts multiply. Twenty percent off followed by ten percent off produces twenty-eight percent total savings.
Can I apply two coupons sequentially?
Yes. Each percentage reduces the balance after the preceding discount. A 20% then 10% reduction equals 28% overall, not 30%.
Does the calculator include tax in savings?
The discount savings are calculated before tax. Tax is separately added to the discounted subtotal at the rate you enter.
