How to use Quilt Border Calculator
Estimate straight butted quilt border strips, fabric yardage and final top dimensions with inner and outer border widths, seam allowance, usable width of fabric and waste buffer.
- Measure quilt top through the center both directions.
- Enter inner and outer finished border widths, or zero for one border.
- Specify seam allowance, usable width of fabric and a purchase buffer.
- Read final quilt dimensions, strip count and yardage estimate.
Important: Separate-fabric, straight-corner planning. Verify joined-strip cutting lengths, printed fabric direction and fabric shrinkage.
Formula and methodology
Each border cut width = finished border width + two seam allowances. Side border strips run along current quilt height; top and bottom strips span current width plus two finished side border widths. Additional borders expand the quilt.
The interactive calculations depend on the inputs, units and assumptions you provide. Display values are rounded for readability, but calculations use unrounded input values where applicable.
Worked example
For a 60 × 80 inch quilt top with a single 3-inch finished border and ¼-inch seams, finished size becomes 66 × 86 inches. The estimator allocates sufficient width-of-fabric strips to cover each border side, with conservative joins.

Frequently asked questions
Does this tool support mitered borders?
No. Its estimates are for straight butted corners. Miters require extra length for angled joins.
Are inner and outer borders both included?
Yes. Outer border dimensions are calculated after adding the finished inner border.
Why might yardage be conservative?
The calculator allocates separate strips for each side rather than performing an optimized cutting layout; some material may be reusable.
