How to use Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator
Calculate cross-stitch design dimensions and fabric cut size from chart stitch counts, fabric count, over-one/over-two stitching and finishing margin.
- Find the chart width and height in stitches.
- Enter fabric count and choose over one or over two (evenweave/linen).
- Enter margin on each edge in inches or centimeters.
- Check design size and fabric cut size before cutting.
Important: Verify chart count, fabric shrinkage and framing margins before cutting.
Formula and methodology
Effective stitches per inch = fabric count ÷ number of fabric threads crossed. Finished size in inches = chart stitches ÷ effective stitches/inch. Cut dimensions = finished dimensions + twice the margin.
The interactive calculations depend on the inputs, units and assumptions you provide. Display values are rounded for readability, but calculations use unrounded input values where applicable.
Worked example
A 140 × 100 stitch chart on 14-count Aida over one measures 10 × 7.14 inches. Add 3-inch margins all around for a fabric cut of 16 × 13.14 inches.
Try entering your own measurements above to reproduce this calculation and understand each result.
Frequently asked questions
What does 28-count linen over two mean?
Stitching over two fabric threads produces approximately 14 stitches per inch on 28-count evenweave/linen.
Is the margin applied on each side?
Yes, the entered margin is added to both left/right and top/bottom.
Does fabric count determine the design stitch count?
No. The chart has a fixed number of stitches; fabric count changes its physical size.
